Brie Larson Was Hesitant to Play Captain Marvel

There are a lot of hidden depths that come with playing a character like Carol Danvers, and it sounds like Marvel is going to take this character to a new place for Captain Marvel. While most superheroes have to contend with a persona and the actual person that they are under the mask, the duality is a bit more extreme for Carol. As star Brie Larson told Entertainment Weekly, while the Kree part of her is important it's her humanity that makes Carol unique.

"You have this Kree part of her that's unemotional, that is an amazing fighter and competitive," Larson says. "Then there's this human part of her that is flawed but is also the thing that she ends up leading by. It's the thing that gets her in trouble, but it's also the thing that makes her great. And those two sides warring against each other is what makes her her."

That sense of duality gives this movie something that some other Marvel movies have lacked: introspection. That doesn't mean this movie is going to be a downer — just look at the Skrulls — but it means they didn't do anything by halves including the emotional bits, which Larson appreciated.

"That is something that is really exciting to me about this film: We did not cut corners on that stuff," Larson says. "Like, when it's funny, it is funny, but also when there's deep emotional things happening, it's real. So I was able to bring some of those same things that I've brought to full dramatic roles into this, which I'm really proud of because I think it will really set this film apart."

Captain America star Chris Evans has said multiple times that he didn't really wan to sign on to the Marvel movies. He understood that these were going to be big and something like that doesn't just change your career — it changes your life. Larson experienced similar hesitation when it came to taking on the role of Carol Danvers for similar reasons as Evans.

"I never saw myself doing something like this, mostly because I like being anonymous," she says. "I like disappearing into characters, and I always felt like if I was out in the public eye too much, it potentially limits you in the future."

However, a good script and the opportunity were things that Larson wasn't able to pass up — much like Evans, it was the character that ultimately changed her mind.

"Just seeing a character who says how she feels and says what's on her mind and doesn't let people stand in her way is incredibly empowering," Larson says.

Not only the face of a Marvel hero but the face of the first one to headline her own movie. It only took 11 years for this to happen. We all saw how much impact Wonder Woman had last year, and Captain Marvel is set to do it again next spring.

Summary: Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will also star Brie Larson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
