Captain Marvel Producer and Directors Say It Will Feel like RoboCop or Terminator 2

People are getting really hyped for Captain Marvel and one of the reasons it's going to be a lot of fun is seeing a different era in the Marvel universe. Right now there are huge sections of the timeline where we don't know much about what was happening and it's going to be cool to see what the '90s looked like in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That is the setting, but the movie itself is going to draw heavily on the action movies of the '80s. According to an interview with executive producer Jonathan Schwartz with ComicBook.com he mentioned that we'll see common action threads in Captain Marvel that we see in movies like Independence Day or RoboCop.

"It feels weird calling it a genre, but the genre is '90s action movie,'" said Schwartz. "If you think about movies like RoboCop or Total Recall or Terminator 2 or Independence Day I think there are common action movie threads you can tease through those movies which are what we're trying to pick up on in this movie."

Director Ryan Fleck went on to say that there are lots of homages to shots from his and co-director Anna Boyton's favorite movies throughout Captain Marvel.

"There's some Terminator 2 in there. French Connection is not so nineties, but there's a big hommage of French Connection in there. … There are little moments, homages to shots from our favorite movies."

While we might recognize some tropes or shots from classic movies that doesn't mean it's going to match those movies in tone. Boyton pointed out that while there are similarities to RoboCop in terms of theme, Captain Marvel is not a dark movie like that one was.

"It is not a dark movie in that way, like Robocop," Boden explained. "I think that what is exciting to us about RoboCop was this idea of a character who's finding himself, and finding his past. Even though it's a dark movie, its also like extremely emotional in that way. If you remember that scene of him walking into his own home, and remembering those moments from his past life and remembering who he was — I mean, that's big. And that was one of the first things we talked to Marvel about in terms of this character: the idea that self-discovery and reconnecting and rediscovering your humanity, and who you were. It's a huge part of this film."

We should expect more TV spots and bits of footage to drop in the next couple of weeks as come into the home stretch for this movie. At the moment, there is some internet drama and trolls review bombing Rotten Tomatoes but that has happened before to plenty of movies that ended up successful. The early box office predictions are also looking strong so there is no reason not to expect this movie to do well commercially once it comes out. As for critically? Well, press screenings are happening soon we'll have to see.

Summary: Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will also star Brie Larson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
