Idris Elba to Star, Direct and Produce The Hunchback of Notre Dame for Netflix
Well this is an interesting turn of events. It looks like Idris Elba is coming to Netflix and he's going to be starring, directing, and producing an adaption of Hunchback of Notre Dame. The Hollywood Reporter shared the story that Elba will adapting this project for Netflix which most people know from the 1996 animated movie by Disney. The story is actually based on a novel by Victor Hugo that was published in 1831.
The Golden Globe winner will also direct and produce the project under his Green Door production shingle, and will also be producing orginal music for the feature, which is being described as a "sonic and musical experience."
This is being sold as "modern day retelling" with writer Michael Mitnick, who wrote The Current War and The Giver bringing it to life. It'll be interesting to see how they address some of the more problematic aspects of the story such as whether or not they will even use the word gypsy since that is often touted as a slur these days. It's also being reported that Elba will be Quasimodo which is just kind of silly. Has anyone looked at him recently? Someone not thinking that he's one of the most gorgeous human being ever will take half of the effects budget.
Elba's directorial debut Yardie dropped at Sundance earlier this year and will be getting a big screen debut later this year.
