Joaquin Phoenix Finalizes Deal to Star in Joker Origin Movie

We've been hearing about the Joker origin movie for months now, and while Joaquin Phoenix has been rumored to be attached to the project for the better part of 2018, no one from Warner Bros. or Phoenix's camp have actually confirmed anything. According to The Hollywood Reporter that changed today as Warner Bros. has officially announced Phoenix in the role.

Todd Phillips is directing and co-wrote the script, which the studio describes as being an "exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale." Scott Silver co-wrote the script.

THR is also reporting that production is set to start in September, and considering that this is being touted as a smaller production, it could be ready to be released as early as spring 2019.

The budget is in the $55 million range, significantly lower than the tentpoles that dominate the form. And the standalone is meant to be darker and more experimental in tone and content (at least as experimental as a studio can be with established brands such as DC), which is described as being akin to a crime drama.

At the moment there isn't a solid release date, and we don't know that much about the movie aside from the fact that it won't be part of the current continuity of the DC Extended Universe. If production does begin in September, we'll be getting some more casting announcements very soon.
