Julianne Moore's Villain In 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' Is "Martha Stewart On Crack"

A spy movie is only as good as its villain and director Matthew Vaughn knew he was going to have to take it to the next level for the sequel to Kingsmna: The Secret Service. Entertainment Weekly caught up with Vaughn for the Comic-Con issue and he talked about Julianne Moore's villain, her plans, and provided two new images.

"The best villains have plotlines which would actually seem like half-decent ideas, if they weren't so crazy," says Vaughn. "They have a plan to completely f— up the world but their motives are not totally ridiculous.

The saying is that "the villain is the hero in their own story" and this is where the best villains come from. It's not saying that you need to sympathize with them, we really need to collective stop doing this to villains, but more that you see the twisted line of logic that brought them from point A to point B.

Vaughn spoke about needing to find an actor who could follow up the insanity of Valentine, played by Samuel L. Jackson in the previous movie.

"For this film, I needed a performer who could fill the shoes of Sam Jackson without any sense of intimidation," Vaughn says. "And someone who could make this character pretty insane but at the same time real. And though Kingsman is hopefully a big popcorn film, I love to put fantastic, brilliant, Oscar-winning talent like Julianne Moore into crazy environments. That's when we get magic happening."

Vaughn went on to elaborate about what Moore's Poppy's plan is.

"She's taken over the global drug business and wants to be on the Forbes list," says Vaughn. "When we tested the movie with an audience, everybody was like, 'What's the Golden Triangle?' I was like, 'For f—'s sake.' No one had heard of it in three test screenings."

The Golden Circle subtitle refers to the Asia's opium-producing Golden Triangle but that appeared to be going the heads of audiences. Poppy sounds like a crazy character and Vaughn went on to describe one of her sayings.

"She has a speech where she goes, 'Sugar is 10 times more addictive than cocaine. It causes more death and misery in America. Yet one is legal. Peddle that s— and you're in the Forbes 500. Peddle coke and you're in jail. What the f—!' So the points she's making are not insane [though] her solutions definitely are."

A hero in their own story indeed.
