The X-Men have been a foundational part of the Marvel universe for as long as one has existed in nearly every medium. In film, the first three movies are part of the 1-2-3 punch that helped kick off the boom we are existing in to this day, and while there is a lot you can say about those films, they nailed a lot of the casting. We know they have because people keep coming back to those same versions of the characters. The MCU is looking to bring their own versions of the mutants to the big screen, and they have hired director Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts*, to helm.
Shreier came into the MCU with a group film, and while it had a hard time finding an audience, it is one of the highest-rated MCU films of the last several years. Things have been pretty quiet for the last year or so, but Schreier recently spoke to Collider and revealed that they have brought on some new faces to work on the script for X-Men, and they are names Schreier has worked with in the past; Lee Sung Jin whom Schreier worked with the Netflix show Beef, and Joanna Calo, whom Schreier worked with on Thunderbolts*.
"We're still developing. You know, one of the exciting things that's tying into Beef is that Sonny [Lee Sung Jin] and Joanna [Calo] both worked on this season," Shreier explained. "Obviously, I mean, Beef is Sonny's show, and Joanna worked on the season as well, and we worked together on Season 1 of Beef and on Thunderbolts*. They have come in and are working on a draft right now, which is really exciting to be able to put that group of people together again."

Shreier went on to talk about what both of these writers bring to the table, saying, "When you go back and read X-Men [comics], there's ideology but also interpersonal drama, almost of a soap opera quality. Having writers who understand both how to drive ideology from personal stakes, if we get that right, that's what will feel most honest to what X-Men can be." When probed for any more information, Shreier didn't waver a bit because this is not his first rodeo, replying, "We'll film in a little black box and never leave. But seriously, the studio has experience with this. We've talked about it, but I can't say anymore." How the new X-Men look, and their costumes, are going to be major points of contention when filming begins, so maybe a black box isn't such a bad idea.
What Do X-Men Look Like In A Post-Doomsday And Secret Wars MCU?
The mutants have been lurking on the edges of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a while now, but it wasn't until September 2023 that we got official confirmation that an X-Men movie was in the works. It took another two years before a director was officially announced. In May 2025, Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier was officially announced and confirmed to direct the film. Schreier explained, "I can't say anything about it, but we've started work on X-Men, and that's obviously very, very exciting. There are so many things that I didn't know about before I started [Thunderbolts*]. The biggest learning curve for me was the proportion of the action to the more emotional, character-driven scenes, and how, even though it's more shooting days than I've ever had, they get eaten up quite quickly by the action stuff. By the time we got to the end of it, it felt like, 'Oh, now I feel like we get how to do this a little bit better.'"
In the middle of July 2025, Kevin Feige spoke briefly about the X-Men, specifically about how they will be recast post-Avengers: Secret. Feige explained, "Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we're thinking along those lines. … 'X-Men' is where that will happen next." So the version of the X-Men that Schreier is (likely) working on is for a cast and maybe even a timeline of the MCU we haven't seen yet. You can't really talk about the film without giving away at least something about what a post-Secret Wars MCU will look like, so expect next to nothing about this or any film coming out after Secret Wars for a while.
