RUMOR: The Joker/Harley Quinn Movie and the Leto Joker Movie on Hold
All it took was one major hit and the DC Universe is looking a lot more stable today than it did a few months ago. Before Aquaman came out and became a huge hit, we didn't really know what DC was going to do next. Now, the horizon is looking a little brighter. However, while that horizon might be a little brighter it remains as cluttered as always. There are so many DC movies in various stages of development that it can be hard to keep track of them all. It sounds like two of them might be on the backburner. According to Forbes the Harley Quinn/Joker movie and Jared Leto Joker movies are no longer happening.
The Mad Love-type Joker and Harley Quinn film has also fallen by the wayside, as has the solo Joker project for Jared Leto's version of the character from Suicide Squad.
There are also reports that Harley Quinn won't be returning to Suicide Squad, which isn't really a bad thing. She has Birds of Prey and it's likely James Gunn will want to start on as clean of a slate as possible. Hopefully, DC will have learned their lesson and will let Gunn make the movie he wants instead of they ended up doing to David Ayer.
Finally, though this unknown, we have a Joker movie coming out this year. If Warner Bros. thinks that version of the character will be more universally beloved than the Leto version then it makes sense that they would ease Leto out of the franchise. These are all rumors, of course, and DC could easily announce a director for one of these movies tomorrow.
The Untitled Joker Movie / The Joker, directed by Todd Phillips, will star Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham. It will be released on October 4th, 2019.
