According to a recent report, Sony Pictures is reportedly developing a new biopic about the legendary CBS anchor, Walter Cronkite. In a new report from Variety, the studio is working with screenwriter David Rothley to adapt Douglas Brinkley's 2012 biography, Cronkite. What's more, Peter Kang and Allie Broome have been picked to "shepherd" the project for Sony.

A New Film Based on CBS Anchor Walter Cronkite May Be More Needed Than Ever

The news comes as CBS News faces heavy criticism for its shift under Bari Weiss, with some wishing the network would return to the days when it was the gold standard of journalism under Cronkite's helm of the Evening News. Cronkite was, at one point, the most trusted voice in America when it came to bringing the news to America. Even former President Lyndon B. Johnson was quoted as saying, "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost middle America," when it came to his reporting on the Vietnam War. The last major biopic about CBS News was the George Clooney-directed Good Night, and Good Luck, which portrayed CBS's Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) and his coverage of the McCarthy Trials at the height of the Red Scare.

The New Biopic Will Be Based on the Book Cronkite by Douglas Brinkley

Official Book Summary: "Douglas Brinkley presents the definitive, revealing biography of an American legend: renowned news anchor Walter Cronkite. An acclaimed author and historian, Brinkley has drawn upon recently disclosed letters, diaries, and other artifacts at the recently opened Cronkite Archive to bring detail and depth to this deeply personal portrait. He also interviewed nearly two hundred of Cronkite's closest friends and colleagues, including Andy Rooney, Leslie Stahl, Barbara Walters, Dan Rather, Brian Williams, Les Moonves, Christiane Amanpour, Katie Couric, Bob Schieffer, Ted Turner, Jimmy Buffett, and Morley Safer, using their voices to instill dignity and humanity in this study of one of America's most beloved and trusted public figures."
