Spiral Producer Reveals That a Sequel Isn't Being Discussed

A producer attached to the Saw franchise is offering fans an update on the status of Spiral 2 after the overwhelming success of Saw X.

Article Summary

  • Producer Oren Koules hints at no current plans for Spiral 2, prioritizing Saw 11.
  • Success of Saw X shifts focus away from a Spiral sequel for the time being.
  • Chris Rock is reportedly interested in a Spiral follow-up despite the shift.
  • Spiral director Darren Bousman envisioned a broader Saw universe with multiple storylines.

It's been a few years since the release of the Saw-centric spinoff film Spiral, which was initially designed to open new doors for the long-running franchise after the loss of its original villain, John Kramer. However, his undeniable popularity eventually led to the character's return in Saw X, acting as a successful pre-death sequel story about the character and his protege Amanda.

So, where does that leave Spiral with Saw 11 now in development?

Saw Franchise Producer Suggests Spiral 2 Isn't in the Cards Just Yet

When speaking to SFX Magazine about the chances of moving forward with a potential Spiral 2, franchise producer Oren Koules revealed that due to the success of Saw X, the studio is currently looking to pursue a different route for now. Koules tells the publication, "Maybe one day we'll come back to doing a [Spiral] sequel. Chris Rock would love to do one." He then adds, "But our focus, because of the success and the response to Saw X, is Saw 11."

After the initial release of Spiral, a few years ahead of Saw X, director Darren Bousman expressed his hopes for a broader Saw universe, explaining, "Just because Spiral exists does not mean there will never be a Saw 9. This is a diversion… this is a different path. You're not done seeing Tobin at all. What I think will happen, if this is successful, is you'll see Spiral 2, and then you'll see Saw 9. And then you'll see Spiral 3; you'll see Saw 10. You might see a TV series. So I think you'll be seeing the Marvelverse of the Saw franchise, where there are different storylines taking place. And I think that that's what it's going to be. It'll exist in the same universe, and there will be different storylines taking place."

Saw X is available for purchase via digital platforms now.
