The Obi-Wan Series Was Originally a Movie

Earlier this year Disney and Lucasfilm finally confirmed one of the longest-running rumors in the Star Wars universe; Ewan McGregor was returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a TV series for Disney+. For many, many years people have been asking for McGregor to return to the Star Wars universe because for all of the hatred the prequels got McGregor one of the things everyone seemed to like. The rumors have been going on for so many years that some [read: me] were happy that Lucasfilm confirmed this TV show we could stop getting ten rumor articles a month.

It turns out that all of those movie rumors were around for a reason since, according to an interview with McGregor over at ComingSoon, it was originally being pitched as a movie and not a TV show.

"It wasn't always going to be a series, not initially," McGregor confirmed. "When we first started talking about, that wasn't really in the cards but everything's changed so much, so quickly. It's really exciting that it is now. I'm really into the idea to be able to tell the story over several hours instead of just one hit. I think it's going to be quite cool."

This isn't that surprising since Disney+ and the idea of having a budget to make a TV show of this scale is fairly new. So while those endless rumors ended up being wrong, we're not getting a movie but a TV show, there was some truth to them. There is a good chance that Disney, Lucasfilm, and McGregor have been talking about Obi-Wan coming back in some capacity since the original sale. The Obi-Wan series is set to start production in the summer of 2020.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, directed by J.J. Abrams, stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams.

It will be flying into theaters on December 20th, 2019.
