Is It Time for the WWE Return of Alberto Del Rio?
A little over a month since Alberto El Patron, known to fans of WWE as Alberto Del Rio, vowed that he would make one more return to WWE before he retired. Del Rio's proclamation seemed surprising considering he had spent the previous year trash-talking his former employer in social media videos recorded with his then-fiancée, current WWE Superstar Paige.
El Patron's public feud with WWE spanned months during his tumultuous relationship with Paige, who was estranged from the company at the time. In April of 2017, El Patron appeared intoxicated in a video on Paige's Snapchat wherein he challenged Triple H to a fight, and accused the WWE executive of having "a big nose and no balls."
"Triple H, you're a fucking pussy. And I don't have to be drunk to say this," Alberto said in the video, though he did in fact appear to be drunk. "You're a pussy."
In another video with Paige and a stuffed tiger, El Patron implied that he blamed WWE for leaking stolen nude photos and sex videos featuring Paige, saying, "I know it was you, motherfucker, I know you did this to me, to my baby. But I'm gonna prove it was you, piece of shit."
"I used to work in that other place where I was angry all the time, hating people all the time, because most of the people working in that place are a bunch of pussies," El Patron said later in that same video, specifically singling out one particular person with a "big nose."
In most businesses, that would pretty much mean the end of the professional relationship between an employee and an employer, but not in the world of pro wrestling. In January, El Patron gave an interview where he blamed his ranting on Paige. The two had since broken up, and Paige had returned to working at WWE, where she was previously out with an injury.
"As you know, I am a man who knows when he was wrong," Patron said in the interview. "In fact I was in contact with them. Like WWE, when they admitted their mistake the first time I left, I also admit my mistake. I personally apologized to Triple H for the issues we had when I was in a bad relationship with my ex-partner. She and her entire family made me believe that they affected our relationship. She made me believe that the [stolen personal sex] videos and all that was happening outside to her was perpetrated by Triple H and the company. At the time I believed her, because she was my partner. I defended her by heart and sword, then things were different. Later I realized how wrong I was to place my trust in that person. I deeply regret my words and apologized to Triple H, his wife and WWE. They understood me."
Patron promised that he would be back in WWE, and now, it seems, he may be working on making that dream a reality. El Patron, whose contract with Impact Wrestling is set to expire soon, was reportedly at WWE Headquarters last week to film talking footage for a Rey Mysterio project. While there, the report claims El Patron met at length with Vince McMahon. Could they have been negotiating his return as Alberto Del Rio? In the wrestling business, you should never say never unless you're dead (and even then, in some cases, WWE can work something out).
