CBS Cancels 'Code Black', the Last of Its Bubble Series

The TV cancellation ax is still swinging, and the latest victim is CBS's Code Black. The medical drama lasted three seasons and was the final series at the network to find out its fate. The news was initially announced on Twitter by series showrunner Michael Seitzman.

Dear #CodeBlack fans, the sad news came today that we were cancelled. It's been a true joy to make this show and watch your response every week. Thank you for all of your passion. Truly, our best episodes have yet to air. We hope you'll watch and enjoy them. We made them for you.

The series started its third season in late April and still has nine episodes to air. The show is averaging a 0.7 demo rating and 5.5 million total viewers looking at the same-day numbers, which is down 30% and 8% of the previous season. The series ranks just above Scorpion and Elementary in total audience and above Elementary and Madam Secretary in demo.

The premise for the series is a look at what happens at Angels Memorial Hospital when the influx of patients is greater than the resources on hand to treat them, or what they call a "Code Black". The series has gone through a lot of changes in its run. Star Marcia Gay Harden has been the mainstay, but original cast members Bonnie Somerville and Raza Jaffrey left after the first season, Rob Lowe joined in season 2, Melanie Chandra leaving at the end of season 2, and Moon Bloodgood coming on as a regular for season 3.

Code Black airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
