'Rashomon' TV Adaption Coming From Amblin Entertainment
Rashomon, the 1950 Akira Kurosawa classic, helped introduce Japanese cinema to the world and Amblin Entertainment plans to create a direct adaptation.
The film tackles on the subject on how truth can be blurred depending on perspective centering on a bandit Toshiro Mifune, bride Machiko Kyō, and her slain fiancee samurai Masayuki Mori. Each tell a different version of the same events about a rape and murder. The concept of examining the same course of events through different perspectives is a trope often used in modern storytelling whether in film or TV.
Some modern filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino have even tweaked the formula to where sequences are often revisited with additional information provided through different perspectives.
While the Kurosawa's Rashomon was a masterpiece in and of itself, but extending the story through television and drawing out what is already a perfect film in its own right, seem sacrilegious. If there's a benefit to this, it could get the curious to see the Kurosawa original, but why not just re-release it to cinemas?
