Top 5 Reasons WWE Fired Eric Bischoff and Made Brother Love Head of Smackdown
WWE announced the shocking news Wednesday: just a few months after bringing on Eric Bischoff as Creative Director of Friday Night Smackdown and just two weeks after the show launched on Fox, Bischoff is out and Brother Love is in as the new Creative Director. WWE sent out the following press release:
Stamford, Conn., October 15, 2019 –WWE (NYSE: WWE) today announced that it has named Bruce Prichard the Executive Director of Friday Night SmackDown, reporting directly to WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon.
Prichard will oversee the creative development of Friday Night SmackDownon FOX and ensure integration across all platforms and lines of business, replacing Eric Bischoff.
Prichard brings nearly 40 years of experience in sports entertainment with an extensive background in character development and creative storytelling. Over the course of his career, Prichard has served in a variety of roles including announcer, producer, agent and on-screen personality. Earlier this year, Prichard returned to WWE as a member of the company's creative team.
We spoke with Dan Seltzer, purveyor of the popular Wrasslin' Examiner 1-900 Hotline, for his expert analysis on the reasons behind Bischoff's firing. Hedging his bet so he can claim to have gotten the scoop no matter what happens, Seltzer provided Bleeding Cool with five possible reasons Bischoff was fired from Smackdown.
- The catering bill was too high with Bischoff just sitting there all the time and not doing anything.
- After learning that a wrestling show on TNT was beating WWE in the ratings, Vince had a Monday Night Wars flashback and fired Bischoff reflexively.
- Smackdown was notably lacking in sexy cuckold storylines just at the time WWE needs them the most, and Bischoff clearly wasn't up to the task, stuck on obviously outdated ideas like Hot Lesbian Action.
- Bischoff is still on the payroll, but WWE is sending him undercover to AEW to TNA the competition. Hogan will soon follow.
- Slick was unavailable.
