"Veep" Star Julia Louis-Dreyfus Takes Bite Out of Apple TV+ with New Development Deal

Not a whole lot is available at the moment, but in the midst of this week's Television Critics Association's (TCA) winter press event, Apple TV+ announced a partnership with comedy legend Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep, Seinfeld, Saturday Night Live).

Per the multi-year contract, Louis-Dreyfus will both produce and star in shows and projects solely for Apple's new streaming service. Just in case you forgot, she's covered in Emmys thanks to her past show successes. So what we have is another example of Apple looking to stack the deck and hoping for another show that's rolling in little gold statues. Look what happened with The Morning Show and Jennifer Aniston at this past weekend's Screen Actors Guild Awards – their plan seems to be working so far.

It's going to be interesting to see how it all play out and what comedic gems come out of Louis-Dreyfus being given what I'm guessing is free reign over her shows and the development teams she assembles.

To no one's surprise, this comes after Apple snagged HBO exec Richard Plepler, which made the negotiations to bring Louis-Dreyfus on board much easier. In case you're confused by that connection, he greenlit Veep – massive success of a show and award show darling. Extra points if you remember which network that was on?

HBO, of course!

She's still free to work on some projects outside the bounds of her deal, like upcoming movie Downhill – which she produces as well as stars in (alongside Will Ferrell and Miranda Otto) that's set for a Valentine's Day release.

Here's what Louis-Dreyfus had to say about the announced deal:

"I am thrilled about this new partnership with my friends at Apple. Also, many thanks and kudos to my representatives for structuring the deal in such a way that I am paid in AirPods."

Can we all get paid in AirPods, Julia? Actually, no – sadly, those don't pay rent. But we can all aspire to get to a point in our lives where we can get paid in the latest cool trendy technology. Dare to dream.
