From Those Who Didn't Get Into The DC Comics Writers Workshop
The last entrants to the DC Writers Workshop have work coming out from DC Comics – those who haven't been nabbed by Marvel Comics. Taught by Scott Snyder, it has fast become a hothouse for those looking to work for the Big Two in comics.
Yesterday, it appears the rejection letters went out. And people started posting their reactions.
Didn't make the grade. Back to work. We should stay in touch with each other despite the setback. Collaboration is more powerful than isolation.
Ah, received official rejection email! It seems slightly upbeat in its wording, which makes me want to ask others, "uh, is this a more positive rejection than yours?" Because I am just that neurotic. Anyway, content:
Thank you for applying to the DC Talent Development Writers Workshop! Although we found your samples particularly compelling, we're sorry to say that we will not be offering you a place in the program this year. We received a high volume of competitive submissions and sadly have only a small number of slots to fill.
We hope though that you'll continue to work on your craft as we were very impressed by your submission.
Although we are unable to accept your application this year, we welcome and highly encourage you to apply again in the future.

So I'm out, just got the official email.
But I just signed a deal for a 5-issue creator-owned miniseries, so I'm not too broken up about it.
Didn't make it.
Yeah I'm out too there's always next year I suppose…
Didn't make the cut. I said before and I'll say again, I'd be dumbfounded what they were looking for if none of the people who I knew that applied made it in. Then again, I've already seen people say they got rejected who I thought were shoo-ins. I'd be curious about the thought process and eager to see who did make the cut.
No trip to Burbank in my immediate future either.
Have enough in the pipeline, it's not the heart breaker it might have been at one time, but still disappointing
Got my official rejection email today.
Back to work on the independent seven book deal I signed at Wondercon.

I am also not one of the chosen. But I'm okay, and all of you will be as well. Keep creating.

I'm out, too. Sigh.
Nope.
So many of you know or may have learned tonightI had applied for the DC Writers Workshop talent search thingy – and I didn't get in.
Basically, I have been hugely excited by the opportunity, as opportunities like this, to have a chance to break into the mainstream, Big Two of comics in this way do not come often. But aside from that, it was an opportunity to learn from some incredibly talented people whose work I greatly admire, such as Scott Snyder.
I didn't make it this year. That's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. It's not going to stop me making comics I want, the way I want. And believe me, there's some exciting stuff on that horizon coming very soon.
But I want to thank everyone tonight for their kind words, thank you to those who have offered me support and helped big me up in my own mind over the last few months. And also, thank you to Kieron Gillen who wrote me a lovely letter of recommendation, that made this soppy ol' gay get a lil weepy.
So yeah. Not the ideal, but hey, I'll be fine. Not the end of me. Far from it. Just you wait and see.
Unfortunately I did not get picked for DC Comics Writer Workshop.
I'm very disappointed, but this won't be the end for me and I want to thankDC Comics, Geoff Johns, Jim Lee, and Scott Snyder for this amazing opportunity for new writers everywhere. Next year, maybe?
Nope.
I've had new business cards made up that read:
Sebastian "Also Ran" Piccione
ALMOST a DC WRITER'S WORKSHOP participant** 'Almost' status is in no way a reflection of actual DC/Warner Brothers information.
Denied
I'm out
Big names there too… so who did get in?
