John Byrne's Trio Looks To Be Rock, Paper, Scissors

Which has a rather rocky appearance for the central character. One stretches very thinly, the other has blades for arms, could the Trio be rock, paper, scisssors?

The cover is also reminiscent of the cover to Giant Sized X-Men #1 – what image of "special effect" could the three be bursting through?
