Welcome back for another dose of new releases, it's Live(ish) From The Games Shop. I hope everyone's been having a good time with the landslide of releases this month now that it's finally nice enough to go outside. This week's batch of games features an anticipated expansion, a beloved puzzler, a niche isometric hack and slash, and an infamous racing resurrection.
Diablo III Reaper of Souls is the first expansion to the popular hack and slash series. Diablo is an isometric action hack and slash game with players taking control of a class like Barbarian or Witch Doctor and set out to defeat evil. Reaper of Souls is a direct continuation from the main game, so no spoilers for the storyline. The expansion adds a new character class, the Crusader, a fifth act to the game with four new environments, a slew of new powers, and an adventure mode allowing players to free roam previous environments. For returning fans the level cap has been bumped up to 70 and developer Blizzard has removed their real money auction house (so I bet that guy who quit his job for the auction house feels dumb.) and changed the drop rate of loot items. Diablo III Reaper of Souls was released Tuesday for PC.
Witch and The Hundred Knight much like Diablo III is an isometric hack and slash game but with a decidedly anime style. Your placed in the role of the titular Hundred Knight a demon who's been summoned by a beautiful swamp witch, Metallia to destroy her forest witch rival. The game features some interesting environments and the story is tongue in cheek. The physical release does include some extra goodies like a 2 CD soundtrack. This is another one of those games where you know if you like or you don't. In a week with another high profile isometric hack and slash you can pick light and funny or super dark. Witch and The Hundred Knight was released Tuesday on PlayStation 3.
Fez is a quirky 2D platform puzzle game by the folks at Polytron Studios. The long in development platformer stars Gomez a 2D creature in a 2D world that can be turned and manipulated in a 3D space to reveal new paths and puzzle solutions. The game's puzzle solving can at times be a little outside the box, (Be prepared to use a Q-R reader) but anyone up for an interesting puzzle game should check this one out. Fez has already been released on Xbox 360 and Steam to a great deal of critical success and some controversy surrounding creator Phil Fish. Fez was released Tuesday on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita.
Carmageddon Reincarnation, is as the name would imply the modern update of the classic road racer. One part Death Race 2000, one part Twisted Metal, Carmageddon pits players against each other in races where damaging your opponents and running over pedestrians earns you more time to compete in the race. Races can be won by unconventional means like killing all pedestrians or destroying all other cars. If your favorite driver ever is Frankenstein check this one out. Be aware that Carmageddon is releasing as part of Steam early access, so there's no guarantee all the features will be working correctly, so think of this more like a beta. Carmageddon Reincarnation released Tuesday on Steam.
An interesting week of releases to say the least. March has been a huge month for games, but it looks like the calendar may slow down just a bit. For me I'm still working my way through South Park The Stick of Truth, and Luftrausers has become my new go to. I may write something more substantial on it, but it's really great on the PlayStation Vita and its cross-buy so you'll get the PlayStation 3 version as well. Keep your eyes on Bleeding Cool for more games news and opinions, and look out for my other regular column Typing on The Dead, where I recap the latest issue of The Walking Dead. Till next time stay gold.
