That Is Not The Richard Sala On The Creeps Magazine. We Checked. (UPDATE)

Cartoonist Richard Sala, of Raw and Blab!, of Night Drive and Dracula with Steve Niles, appears to have over 1500 friends on Facebook, everyone from Bob Layton to Steven Grant to Len Wein to Howard Porter.

And he seems to be using his Facebook page and profile as a platform to launch a revival of the famed Creepy magazine. Except, he's calling it The Creeps magazine. And publishing it, not from Warren but from Warrant.

But, here's the thing. It is not Richard Sala. Not at all.

Because this is not Richard Sala's art, even if it is signed by him

It appears to be an attempt to recreate the classic days of Warren's Creepy and Eerie horror comics, a pastiche, a spoof even. They appear to have a number of familiar names working on the book.

But, as Sala tells me, confirming that is not his artwork being used,

I wish him no ill will.  I'm hoping he didn't intend it to be something that might be negative to me and my career, just an honest blindspot, maybe?  But, as a lifelong struggling artist I'm painfully aware that my name is all I have when all is said and done.

We have contacted representatives of The Creeps to ask what's up here…

UPDATE: We receive a message from Richard Sala. The other Richard Sala. He writes,

Well Rich, my birth certificate and drivers license both say Richard Sala and I've had that name since the day I was born. If anyone wants to make an issue out of my birth name, that's fine, my new comic magazine can use any press it can get. www.thecreepsmagazine.com.

My artistic style is more classic, along the lines of Frazetta and Wrightson, who are my primary influences, so no one should mistake my print work for the much more cartoonish work of the animator of the same name. I've been on Facebook promoting The Creeps magazine for about 8 weeks, had thousands of adds and likes, and this is the first time anyone has ever claimed I was not Richard Sala; my attorney will assure you that is the name on the checks he receives from me.

The Creeps has only 5 interior page of my own work, the rest of the magazine is work from early Warren Publishing greats like Ken Kelly, who produced, among others, the album covers "Destroyer" and "Love Gun" for the rock group KISS, Frank Brunner, Rich Buckler and Joe Rubinstein (much more well known for their work for Marvel) as well as newer talent like Shawn Van Briesen and Randy Valiente of "Grimm Fairy Tales" fame.

If my name was John Smith, I'd be in real trouble…

It's clear that some folk have signed up to that Facebook page because they think he is the other Richard Sala though. It might me worth finding a middle name, a Rich or a Rick to avoid confusion.

Maybe even a Dick.
