When Is Fan Art Not Fan Art? When It's Commissioned For The Dark Tower Movie

Intended to launch a film and television franchise, the The Dark Tower combines elements from several novels in the eight-volume series, taking place partly in modern-day New York City and partly in Mid-World, Roland's Old West-style parallel universe. It will be released on August 4th in the US, and so marketing is full speed ahead.

Fan art? As the image says, it's a limited-edition print by Jae Lee, who was the most significant artistic contributor to the Dark Tower comic book adaptation. "Fan art" usually refers to art depicting existing characters that the artist drew simply for the fun of it. The artwork was commissioned for the movie, which doesn't really fall in line with the term.

The Dark Tower was directed and co-written by Nikolaj Arcel, a continuation of Stephen King's novel series of the same name. It stars Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, a gunslinger on a quest to protect the Dark Tower — a mythical structure that supports all realities — and Matthew McConaughey as his nemesis, Walter O'Dim, the "Man in Black".
