Disney Agreed to Give Rian Johnson His Own Star Wars Trilogy Without a Story Pitch

How much confidence does Disney have in Rian Johnson? Turns out it could be a lot more than any of us thought. We knew Disney must have been happy with Johson's work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi when they announced that they were giving him his own trilogy. It takes a lot of talent and good will to get what Johnson got and we got a better idea of what that was when /Film asked Johnson if he could share anything about the new trilogy.

There's not much to talk about, honestly. I'm just at the beginning of the beginning of it.

That sounds like he doesn't have anything really and when asked if he had pitched a story to Katheleen Kennedy it turns out he didn't.

No. It came about because we were getting to the end of making this and again, I knew I wasn't doing the next one. And I had had a really good time not just making this movie, but working with Kathy and also working with Disney, working with Bob Iger, Alan Horn, and Alan Berg. And we just had just a really good experience. And we were all…it was like last week of senior year. We were cleaning out our lockers. And all getting kind of sad. And saying, how do we keep working together? And that I threw out, I said, the most interesting thing to me would be a new trilogy, one story told over three movies. Go new places, meet new folks, come up with a new story to tell in the Star Wars universe. The sky's the limit. That sounds thrilling. And they really responded to that. So we're off, yeah.

The final shot of The Last Jedi is proof enough that Johnson knows what he's doing when it comes to Star Wars. He understands this world and where this series needs to post after Episode IX. No doubt that Kennedy and everyone else saw that final shot and went "yep, let Johnson do what he wants. He gets it."

Summary: Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, and Adam Driver. It will be released on December 15th.
