Vampire Diaries' Julie Plec Will Helm CW's Roswell Reboot
The CW isn't letting Julie Plec go far. The Vampire Diaries boss had already been tapped to helm an episode of Riverdale this season, and now she has signed on to the network's reboot of Roswell. Plec worked with Roswell writer Carina Adly MacKenzie on The Originals and has been slated to direct the pilot and be an executive producer if the project gets a series order.
The project, which has yet to get a title, is based on the book by Melinda Metz, Roswell High. The original series was adapted by Jason Katims and starred Shiri Appleby and Jason Behr. It aired on both the WB and UPN from 1999 to 2002. This was prior to the networks merging in 2006 to become the CW.
The official logline for the project:
After reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he's an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.
Along with writing, MacKenzie will executive produce with Pec, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Lawrence Bender and Kevin Kelly Brown. Brown was an EP on the original series as well.
Plec's other series, The Vampire Diaries spinoff, The Originals, just starts its final season April 20th.
