Are Comics For Everyone? Tom King Thinks Not
Yesterday, comic book writer Tom Taylor tweeted out the following.
I believe comics are for everyone.
There is no excuse for harassment.
There is no place for homophobia, transphobia, racism or misogyny in comics criticism.— Tom Taylor (@TomTaylorMade) August 26, 2018
Quite a few familiar names followed up. Both repeating and elaborating thoughts in the wake of 'comicsgate' discussion regarding Marsha Cooke and Darwyn Cooke.

I've been out of town but I believe my stance on "comicsgate" has always been clear…comics are for everyone, there's no conspiracy, treat everyone kindly & with respect, 'politics' have always been part of superhero comics.

Anyway, comicsgate is nonsense and no, anybody about to tweet that "but find out more about comicsgate" link at me, I'm alright, no thanks. That "few bad apples" excuse doesn't fly one bit with me either.

The existence of comics that don't appeal/aren't marketed to you isn't a personal attack or inherently political.

Nuance, ambiguity & debate are part of art. You can criticize work without dehumanizing the folks who make it:

Some people are built to stand up & shout. Others folks show it in their work or try to move mountains behind the scenes.
Just know that if you're out there making comics for everyone. I'm behind you doing that anyway you can.

There was some concern over some of the language used, which Tom addressed.
Absolutely.
Believe me, "criticism" was in air quotes when I wrote the original tweet. I should have made that clearer. https://t.co/6iYj3jQLX8— Tom Taylor (@TomTaylorMade) August 27, 2018
Will try that when America wakes up :)
— Tom Taylor (@TomTaylorMade) 27 August 2018
Well, before America wakes up, there were plenty of other thoughts and observations of course,
Here's a quote from Vox Day, who works closely with and publishes the work of prominent and influential members of Comicsgate. This is how he feels about black people and black cultures: pic.twitter.com/aYe5bdiYtQ

When I walked away from coloring Cyberfrog, I was relentlessly hammered by ComicsGate for being a "traitor" and a "Judas". EVS and his followers attacked me and my family, made fun of my wife's cancer diagnosis, threatened physical violence on me…
— Moose Baumann (@MooseBaumann) August 23, 2018
Let's put it together. According to comicsgate I am faking being trans to get work in a dying industry that's focused on a medium I despise because nobody was hiring me (to do a thing I hate doing) before I transitioned just so I can hasten this industry's demise.
What a plan.
— Oh Shit It's Magdalene Visaggio (@MagsVisaggs) August 25, 2018
#Comicsgate please add me to your blacklist proudly. Creativity knows no color, religion, gender or sexual orientation. I love #comics not #hate
— Adam Glass (@AdamGlass44) August 26, 2018
if you wanna know what comicsgate is about, just remember that Meyer's most frequent complaint is probably that women in comics need bigger boobs.
the rest of it is exactly that mature and thought-out.
— Oh Shit It's Magdalene Visaggio (@MagsVisaggs) August 24, 2018
And comic book writer Tom King also had a different take, positioned, at least linguistically, against the original tweets,
Comics aren't for everyone.
Created by the children of immigrants, it is the medium of the outsider and the outcast, the nerd who won't fit in.
We exist, we thrive because we recognize and amplify the voices of those who must struggle mightily to be heard.
We say, I'm here. pic.twitter.com/kn4IVeKxqH
