'The Walking Dead': AMC Confirms 3rd Series in "Active Development"

While it's been both hinted at and formally discussed in the past, AMC Networks officially confirmed during its quarterly earnings call with Wall Street analysts that it will be expanding the undead apocalypse with a new The Walking Dead spinoff. CEO Josh Sapan referenced a third series, with COO Ed Carroll adding that the project was in "active development" – though not much else in regards to specifics was made available, including if the new series would be part of the network's distribution agreement with Hulu.

"We're not at a stage where we'll be announcing its plans to premiere, but we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines. We feel very good about the development of that series. We're not in a position to talk about partnerships in terms of other territories or ancillary windows, other than that there's a healthy appetite for it and we've had a number of conversations with a lot of players in the space."

– Carroll

The ninth season of the long-running AMC series has seen positive growth and change under the leadership of showrunner Angela Kang, earning strong reviews from both critics and viewers. So while Carroll understands that shows that have been on the air as long as The Walking Dead have are destined to suffer softening of the ratings, he is also aware the The Walking Dead remains the No. 1 series on cable and the No. 2 drama on TV, behind NBC's This Is Us. On the global stage, the series is one of the top three show internationally – alongside HBO's Game of Thrones and Netflix's Stranger Things:

"We are well aware that when a show has been around for nine years, you would expect viewership to be declining, but I think we've managed that and managed that well. When The Walking Dead is no longer part of the channel, I think that will have more of an impact on revenue than on [income] because generally expenses go up as the seasons continue and viewership declines. That's just a general pattern with any show that's been around as long as The Walking Dead has."

AMC Network's's fourth-quarter results beat Wall Street estimates, with revenue of $773 million coming in more than $15 million above analyst expectations.

The Walking Dead season 9, episode 12 "Guardians": While one community struggles to ease tensions that threaten to divide from within, the true nature of another group comes into focus. A mission to rescue a friend has deadly consequences.

The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights on AMC at 9 p.m. ET
