In Disney's Wreck-It Ralph, runaway bad guy Ralph hops between the games in Litwak's arcade, skipping from 8-bit beginnings to 90s-style cartoon Karts, and on to the cutting edge HD of an in-your-face First Person Shooter (FPS). And every step of the way, Ralph had an army of Disney animators chasing behind, racing to keep up with the demands of these different animation styles.
Creating this variety of distinctive video game worlds was a particular challenge because Wreck-It Ralph was animated on computers and, as the film tells us, computer programs are strict things that like rules and regulations. There's a reason Pixar started the CG revolution with a story about characters made of hard, shiny plastic.
