California Tiki: The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, 'Mad Men' of the '50s – a Rare Glimpse of American Psychic Scars

Tiki culture was all about creating a frozen-in-time, idyllic wonder that bore curious resemblance to the World War II Pacific Theater. The crucial work of the 20th century to understand Tiki is the 1956 film The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, which explored soldiers' return home while haunted by the pain of the ugliest and most mesmerizing moments of the war.

The film stars Gregory Peck as Tom Rath, a sort of proto-Don Draper of Mad Men who has to juggle the pressures of the burgeoning American economy and his own experiences in the war. We discuss this key film with an eye towards Tiki Culture.
