Mark Evanier is a writer, screenwriter, biographer, and comics historian, best known for writing Groo The Wanderer with Sergio Aragones, and working with Jack and Roz Kirby, dedicated to preserving his legacy. He is also the co-creator of The DNAgents and its spin-off, Crossfire, as well as writing Tarzan and Blackhawks comics, animated series Garfield and Friends. Dungeons & Dragons, and more. He has also attended every San Diego Comic-Con since 1970. He also keeps a daily blog, and this past month that has included a number of posts entitled Missing Masterpieces, in which Mark Evanier has been detailing original artwork that was stolen from his home. It's a million dollars worth, at least.

Dave Stevens

"Years ago, I did some comic books for Eclipse Comics featuring characters created by the talented Will Meugniot and myself. The two main ones were The DNAgents and Crossfire. I was fortunate to have along with Will, other friends who drew real well…like the late, great Dave Stevens. Dave drew several covers for us and was nice enough to present me the original art for two of those covers — Crossfire and Rainbow #4 and DNAgents #24. Everyone loved what he did — including, apparently, a construction-type worker who did some work at my house. Or at least, he loved those covers or maybe what he thought he could sell them for well enough to steal the originals and some other stuff when I wasn't looking. Yes, I know who he is. No, I don't know where he is although the Los Angeles Police Department says they're hot on his trail. If you see the originals to these — and some other pages I may list here soon — please let me know. Make the jobs of our hard-working detectives easier and make me smile."

Captain America #112

And again.

"Of all the eighty-seven quadrillion pages Jack Kirby drew in his career, my favorite might be this one from Captain America #112. I italicized "might" because there are so many to pick from but when I think of Captain America, I think of this remarkable page. And one reason it's remarkable is that it's from an issue which Jack had to draw over a weekend…and the inker of it, George Tuska, probably didn't have much longer to ink the twenty pages. Jack probably did his end of this in about two hours. I was quite thrilled to own this page and quite upset that it was among many that were stolen from my home recently. We're still figuring out the full extent of the thievery and sending updates over to the police along with info on the guy who, with help or on his own, pilfered stuff from me. I won't be writing much about the case here but I will be sharing a few more scans while we see how efficiently the Wheels of Justice can turn."

Detective Comics #371

And again

"I can't find my scan of it but the original art for this cover was stolen from my home recently. It adorned Detective Comics #371 and was drawn by Carmine Infantino and Murphy Anderson with lettering by Gaspar Saladino and coloring by (I assume) Jack Adler. Is this one of the silliest covers ever on a comic book with Batman on it or is this one of the silliest covers ever on a comic book with Batman on it? But I kinda like it and I'd like it back if only so I can spend more time trying to figure out why the left hand of the crook in the orange shirt seems to be underground. Lemme know if you see the original art anywhere."

He has now given more details and an idea of the amount that has been taken. It is a lot.

"As I've mentioned, I was recently the victim of a robbery — and what really hurts is that I know who did it and it was someone I trusted a lot and not for a short time. This person, possibly in cahoots with others, stole a lot of original comic book artwork from my collection, many of them pieces that were gifts to me from the people who drew them. And most of those people are no longer with us. I have compiled a not-quite-complete list of the items taken and some of them have already turned up on the collectors' market. Naturally, I want them back and I want to see the responsible party/parties brought to justice. You can download this list as a PDF — it's four pages — by clicking here. If you are all involved in the marketplace for such items, please download the list…share it with others…post the link online. I don't have access to all the online forums for artwork selling or trading but if you're on one, please make sure it gets there. Thank you and I'll keep you posted."

If anyone does come across these unique pages of original artwork, including the complete original artwork from Fantastic Four #84 by Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnottplease get in touch with Mark.
