Bleeding Cool Bestseller List – 2nd November 2015 – Chewbacca Beats Batman

Chewbacca (2015-) 002-014

I can see the phone call in David Gabriel's office at Marvel. "Did you know our second issue of our Chewbacca comic – Chewbacca! I know! Well instore it outsold DC's big Batman Justice League crossover in which Batman confronts Joe Chill, as a god?… I know, I know. I reckon Jar Jar Binks #3 will outsell Dark Knight III at this point."

This is the Top Ten Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait to the weekend to get this week's comics. We salute you, and the keenness you bring to your passion.

  • 1. Star Wars: Chewbacca #2
  • 2. Justice League: Darkseid War – Batman
  • 3. Batman & Robin Eternal #4
  • 4. Star Wars: Kanan #7
  • 5. New Avengers #2
  • 6. Deadpool Vs Thanos #4
  • 7. Fight Club 2
  • 8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #51
  • 9. Robin, Son of Batman #5
  • 10. Captain America: Sam Wilson #2

Thanks to the following retailers,

Who had this to say.

Marvel's New 52 version re boot is getting cold feet. New Avengers 2 did terrible saleswise. And the evil Reed Richards even states in the issue about the "new" universe they are in. How is this not a reboot? Justice League Darkseid War Batman 1 blew out the doors. Selling even more copies in two days than the main Justice League title does in over a week surprisingly enough. Not a great sales week though not a bad one either.

Supergirl back issues are selling well. People are getting back issues thanks to DC not having a current Supergirl title. Harley Quinn and Deadpool still in high demand. DC took half the spots on the list, all of them Bat-Family books. I've never had to type more colons than I did for this weeks list.

New (Young) Avengers was our #1 seller in a lackluster sales week. I'm guessing this is due to subscribers having not caught up with their reading. I can't imagine this title being a top ten seller 5 months from now. Chewbacca and Captain America were Marvel's only other charting books. We still have quite a few subscribers but Squirrel Girl #1 did little to no business off the shelf for us. Small Marvel week allowed Hellboy and Fight Club to sneak into the top ten.

Black Magick did better than expected and sold out on Thursday.

Sold more copies of the Secret Wars Handbook than Deadpool vs. Thanos.

Would you believe me if I told you we've been selling a lot of Preacher tps? Crazy, right?

A light week helps DC get four book in the top ten. Big concerns about the future of the All-New All-Different Marvel–readers aren't excited about this, and the six-to-eight-month rollout of new titles is killing enthusiasm. It feels like Marvel and DC have, through their destruction of their main lines this spring and summer, chased away a significant portion of their readers. Never have I seen less enthusiasm for the output of the Big Two.

Nice week for a breather. Chewbacca #2 was the top spot along with the rest of the Star Wars titles. No surprise in that regard. Black Magick was the best new launch from Image when it comes to the numbers in the last 6 months. That's what happens when all you do is throw titles against the wall to see if they will stick. Might want to work on the quality side of things for 2016.

Adventure Comics sold like crazy. Most people probably forgot that Supergirl was featured in a pretty long run of that title. Batman was also on the move since it was the first time in months that i got early issues of the Synder run.
Pretty light week this week, which allowed for the turtles to come in at number one for us. Fight Club 2 has started to slow down for us, and Batman & Robin Eternal is already dropping readers faster than the previous Eternal. Perhaps people are tired of DC's weekly series?

The Hottest selling comic on the aftermarket is also the #1 selling comic of the week. Rick and Morty #7 has taken over the comic book world and it's not going to slow down anytime soon. Deadpool Thanos comes in a far #2 as marvel takes #4 (Spiderman 2099) #10 (Squirrel girl) as well. Fightclub takes the 3rd spot as the book continues to draw in new fans.  TMNT and Chew take the #5 and #6 spot.  Dc comics takes #7 with Cyborg.  Star Wars Chewy takes #8 and Kanan takes #9 spot.   WE are having strong weeks with lessor customers but increased average sales.  This week was the first week that indies were 53% of our our total sales.  We are shattering Indy sales record, which leaves us to ask (except for Harley and Star Wars) Marvel and DC where are you?   Though we enjoy seeing your WHOLESALE pie charts showing your ownership in WHOLESALES sales it's not translating to the Brick and mortar stores.
