Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo Working Together Again – But Not at DC Comics?

Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo have been one of the more perfect creative pairings. With perennial sellers for DC Comics such the Luthor and Joker collections, the Rorschach chapter of Before Watchmen getting a new boost from the TV show, and the recent release of the collected Batman Damned topping the charts, they should be a bankable team that DC Comics might choose to lock down for many more collaborations to come.

However, 'production issues' regarding Batman Damned, that saw the comic hit the headlines a year ago for unintended reasons triggered a bit of an  overreaction from DC Comics across the board – and Batman Damned suffered the most, with subsequent issues repeatedly delayed as pages had do be redrawn from scratch and demanded rewrites upon rewrites came from editorial, after previously being greenlit.

Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo Working Together Again – But Not at DC Comics?

Since then, I understand a rumoured Suicide Squad relaunch starring Wally West from Brian Azzarello was dropped in favour of Scott Lobdell's Flash Forward. And Azzarello's Birds Of Prey series has been truncated to a one-shot. Of Lee Bermejo, here have been no confirmed new projects since.

It's also notable that Brian Azzarello and Emanuela Luppachino's announced Birds of Prey ongoing Black Label comic book from DC Comics has been switched to a 96-page one-shot for ten bucks, containing what would have been in the first four issues.

Well, the word heard at Thought Bubble this week, which Azzarello attended, is that the pair are reuniting for a new comic book project. The twist? For the first time, it won't be at DC Comics…

Could it be that DC pushed the golden team too far? And what could it be? Bermejo did tease something called The Fiend earlier in the year…

Azzarello is also returning to Moonshine with Eduardo Risso, from Image Comics this Wednesday, after 18 months away…
