Bruce Banner Channels John Dee in This Week's Immortal Hulk #5
John Dee was an advisor to Queen Elizabeth the First, as an astronomer and astrologer – there was little difference then, and as a mathematician, alchemist and occultist. He coined the phrase 'British Empire', and he talked to angels out of scientific curiosity, to learn the universal language of creation.
He also used seers and scryers such as Edward Kelley, who Dee maintained angels dictated several books to him this way, through Kelley, in a special angelic language. At some point, this led to Kelley successfully persuading Dee that they should swap wives which each other, ordered to by the angels. This all came from 'automatic writing', where Kelley would allow himself to be taken over by such spirits to dictate their words.
This was at a time when science and magic were pretty much the same thing, and one might step from one discipline to another.
And in this week's Immortal Hulk sees Bruce Banner use John Dee as an inspiration when communicating with the Hulk. Ewing has referred to John Dee a number of times in his work the novel I Zombie, which also has a lead zombie private-eye called John Doe…
