Captain America does love a speech. and everyone loves to hear one from him. Over the years, he has made quite a few notable examples across the comic books…
And a fair few on the big screen as well. One of the comcis speeches that made the headlines, was written by J Michael Straczynski, came from the Spider-Man and the Civil War crossover, and justified his decision not to side with Tony Stark and the US Government over the legal restriction of superheroes.
Today, J Michael Straczynski is writing the new Captain America series, drawn by Jesus Saiz. But it hasn't given Steve Rogers much of a chance to make such a stance.
For now, it's mostly Steve Rogers in the thirties, using his young fists without much success.
But with promise of what is to come in the shadows…
The legend has yet to take place, but I get the feeling as Ateve gained his strength, so he will gain his speeches. It even works for Hallow's Eve in her one shot today, when she just puts a Captain America mask on…
And, it seems, the words and the worlds just come.
But it is today's Uncanny Avengers #3 rather than Captain America #2 that sees Captain America give a Big Mutant Speech to the assembled New Yorkers outside the burned-out shell of the Krakoan Treehouse.
And speaking in defence of the mutant race, currently blamed for acts of terrorism, and on the run from the actual terrorist group in league with the US government, Orchis.
And gets a drink to his chest in response. Not the usual way people initially react to a Captain America speech… and with the press right there as well.
Eagle, flag and a promise of what is happening now, in the shadows. In quite the Frank Miller fashion.
And also in quite the Mark Millar fashion. And even brings up the very contradictions at the heart of Krakoa, and how it makes for an imperfect allegory to both Israel and Palestine. But also pretty much everything else dividing people.
And it's all down to fear. A message Captain America can make to everyone… if they can forget what happens with Captain America, Utopia and AVX, that is.
…wistful punks, cross-armed Karens, inspired people in wheelchairs, members of the press, everyone.
Calling out Orchis, defending rule of law, and speaking to the whole crowd. And even winning over one very important contingent, someone almost as old as he is.
Malt Throwing Old Lady is now Teap Cap once more. One Orchis have lost that support, what's next for them?
The Show Trial of Cyclops. coming to an Xbook near you soon…
