Circe Addresses Her New 52 Look in Wonder Woman #56 (Spoilers)
Circe, daughter of Helios and Perse is a Greek goddess of magic who imprisoned Odysseus in Homer's Odyssey and in some versions a daughter of the goddess Hecate, but in the DC Universe she is an evil sorceress and a recurring foe of Wonder Woman.
She first appeared in comics in Wonder Woman #37, by Robert Kanigher and Harry G. Peter as a sorceress…
…but by the fifties played a role as a seductress…
…and by the eighties she was both, a siren of sorcery. The clothes had… slipped a little over the decades.
As for the nineties and noughties, well…
There was a certain theme. The New 52 brought us one version of Circe in Superman/Wonder Woman for the New 52…
But a very different version in the Greg Rucka Rebirth version. The clothes have come back on, the breasts have shrunk, the hair has receded, and more.
So how will the new Wonder Woman Witching Hour, dealing with the impact of Hecate on the DC Universe handle Circe and eplain all these differering versions? Well they decide to have their cake and eat it.
In today's Wonder Woman we get the Circe we know and love. At least initially… Turns out it's always been a show.
So, going forward creators can have the nineties-style Circe and have her chew the scenery totally in character – or have the jacketed with sensible shoes version as well, depending on the story…
Ain't continuity grand?
