During San Diego Comic-Con, I posted an article which, ironically, spread everywhere about comic book creators at SDCC testing positive for COVID-19 amidst news of a new variant and a spike on the West Coast of the USA. Now dubbed online as the SDCC variant, plenty of people who went to the show have been posting positive signs of their tests to social media. Here are a few comic book creators and industry figures who have gone down with the virus. And most worryingly, it starts with the 78-year-old co-creator of Blade, Teen Titans, Black Cat, Nova and Crisis, Marv Wolfman.
Marv Wolfman: I went to Comicon San Diego and all I got was this lousy Covid.
Melissa Flores: Tested positive for Covid post SDCC – it hit me like a truck. Resting away from social media, but wanted to step in to say a sincere thank you @boomstudios , @Hasbro and the fans for allowing me to be part of 8 years with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. This is a bittersweet moment for Power Rangers, and I know how much this book meant to so many of you. I have so much love for the franchise, and I will hold it in my heart forever. Thank you for taking this journey with me. Looking forward to the future of Power Rangers, and what comes next.
Mitch Gerads: I really wanted this absolutely baller BTAS framed animation cell, but Lauren said it was too expensive. So the only souvenir I came home with from SDCC was Covid.
Pearl Low: I was the only person wearing a mask on the panels I was on at SDCC. And what happens? Someone I was next to tested positive for COVID. I honestly have nothing else to say to yall, like?? MASK UP! PROTECT YOURSELVES AND THE COMMUNITY!!!
Justin Richards: Looks like I'm in the post-SDCC COVID club. I didn't feel anything til late last night, but if we hung out at all you might wanna test to be safe. Hope everyone else got better news than me.
Emily Murray: Been bedbound (so sick) since getting from back SDCC thanks to the parting gift of COVID – but at least I'm finally reunited with Holmes who is playing Doctor and looking after me
Melissa Meszaros: Even with masking, hand sanitizer, extra zinc and C; SDCC broke me. I'm ooo til Monday. Vacation on the rocks.
Fredrik Malmberg: The hard working @HeroicSignature crew is decimated in HALF by Covid after Comicon but the campaign continues to Indy and #GenCon2024 with THE OLD GUARD (reinforced by Shawn).
Keith Kelly: So despite wearing a mask in public (I admittedly had it off outdoors) I apparently got COVID at #SDCC. I feel fine, and am going to test again just in case, but this was the one con I staffed where I wasn't able to get a booster beforehand (thanks, US Government).
Anthony Fowler Jr: Looks like I came home from SDCC with a souvenir after all.
Be safe, y'all.Jason Shawn Alexander: I gotta say. #sdcc was a real bust this year. #covid Stay healthy kids.
Ivy Noelle Weir: Hey SDCC — my coworker who was masked the entire show tested positive for COVID and is laid out, and while I am so far testing negative, I feel like crap and assuming I will test positive at some point. So even if you masked like we did, I'd test before re-entering society
Rantz Hoseley: I'd managed to go four years without getting COVID. Thanks a fucking lot SDCC. Anyone who met me at SDCC should probably get tested. Fucking hell.
Leigh Walton: I tried to be pretty good about masking at SDCC this year but spent yesterday out sick and now have tested positive for Covid. Be careful out there, folks
Mike Celestino: Two years ago I missed Comic-Con due to contracting COVID-19 the week before, and this year I contracted COVID *at* Comic-Con. Nature is healing? SDCC 2024
Lea Seidman: Hi everyone at SDCC and home.
After waiting 36 years to get that wonderful invitation to be a Special Guest at SDCC, and after 1 evening and 3 days of delightful staff (hello, Ricardo!), and lovely fans…
I have forking Covid and have to miss my last day at the show.
Sum and David will be running the table today.
Everything is on sale today, too!
I'll see you mugs next year!Rick Parker: I tested positive for Covid and am secluding myself in my hotel room.
There are also lots of people posting recriminations online, saying that they wore masks, and people who didn't mask up only have themselves to blame. Just remember, though, that masking up doesn't really protect you, but it can help protect others from you… I get the feeling however that there may be considerably more masking at SDCC next year.
