Comics Sales Increased in Russia After Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky Called Readers "Pathetic"

Last month according to the Moscow Times, the Russian culture minister Vladimir Medinsky told an audience at the Moscow international book fair that "it's pathetic for adults to read comic books". That "Comics are for those who can't read well… it's like chewing gum, it's not food. Comic books are aimed at children who are only learning to read," Medinsky was quoted as saying by the Moskva News Agency.

Ivan Chernyavsky, who co-owns the Chuk and Geek comic book store in Moscow, helped lead a Russian social media response with the #ядебил (#I'mAMoron) hashtag, named after initial – and later corrected- reportage of Medinsky's words.

But Dmitry Yakovlev, of Russian comic book publisher Bumkniga, told the Guardian newspaper that "Medinsky's comment was pure stupidity, therefore supporting the comic industry. Sales increased."
