Comixology Bestseller List – 7th September 2018 – Marvel Pick-Up

Welcome to the Comixology Bestseller list, your guide to see how well your favorite titles are selling digitally. Every week I'll post the ranking of every new title, plus a ranking of the best selling volumes & graphic novels. As always, I hope you find it interesting and informative.

For the first half of the year, DC's dominance of the digital Top 10 was practically guaranteed each week. But now it's September, and yet another Marvel victory isn't all that shocking anymore. The final Top 10 score this week: Marvel 5, DC 3, Image 2. How did the status quo change so quickly? Let's look at the reasons:

Fresh Start: Many of us rolled our eyes when Marvel announced yet another line-wide relaunch. I was one of them, I admit it. But I also admit Fresh Start has been a big win for the company. As we can see this week, Captain America and The Immortal Hulk are now regular Top 10 contenders, with Avengers a now Top 5 elite. Add in the monumental return of the Fantastic Four, and it's clear Marvel isn't screwing around anymore.

Bruce Banner: I hearby nominate the good doctor for the 2018 Marvel MVP. His return gave Avengers: No Surrender a critical boost midway through when sales were dipping. And his solo title landed him in the Top 10, a stunning 20-spot improvement from Totally Awesome Hulk/Incredible Hulk. Too bad he's unavailable to receive any awards while he's being hunted by an investigative reporter.

DC Releases: While DC has been trying to bolster its lineup with New Age of Heroes, Sandman Universe titles, and Jinxworld, it's also reeling in some of its big fish. The most obvious absence is Superman, who now under the control of Brian Michael Bendis, has gone from appearing every week with his buddy Batman, to showing up every two weeks. Mister Miracle and Doomsday Clock went bimonthly for the remainder of their runs. Hal Jordan won't return until November. And with Injustice 2 wrapping up, that's another spot DC is surrendering.

Now the good news for DC is that it looks likes Sandman Universe off to a great start, with the first two books landing in the Top 10. But Jinxworld looks less encouraging sales-wise, and New Age of Heroes has hit a new low, with The Curse of Brimstone and The Unexpected failing to crack the Top 40 this week. So to summarize: DC's new releases in 2018 have been a mixed bag, and as a result they've lost their grasp on the Top 10.

And in a disappointing development, John Layman and Nick Pitarra's Leviathan has dropped 17 spots after last month's promising debut. It's another reminder the indie comic market can be tough racket, and why just staying stable is considered a win. I wish Layman and every indie creator success in this crazy endeavor.
