Descender #2 Will Leave You On The Edge Of Your Seat
After reading the first issue of Descender last month, I could hardly wait to get my hands on the next installment. We were introduced to two main characters, Dr. Quon and Tim-21. While we mostly only witnessed Dr. Quon in his past, our time spent with Tim-21 was in the present, and very emotional. From Image Comics, Descender #2, written by Jeff Lemire, with art by Dustin Nguyen continues in an interesting format. Throughout the issue we alternate between the present day in which Tim-21 is being chased by a group of men attempting to capture him, and a memory backup that allows us to see Tim-21 from his first moment of consciousness.
Moving back and forth between the two created such a powerful, fast paced, reading experience. Between the considerable alarm gained from witnessing Tim-21 running with bandit away from a terrifying group, and the heartfelt moments of his past, I couldn't have been more glued to the page. I want to comment on the small detail of a red "Upload in progress…" being displayed at the bottom of the pages that feature Tim-21's past. While the plot already felt heart-pounding, watching the number increase enhanced that to a different level. We learn that Tim-21 was created by Dr. Quon, and we get to see the first words of wisdom that he's given before he's sent off to his family. I found those scenes to be enlightening. However, the scenes that feature Tim-21 and his family, tugged at my heartstrings. Jeff Lemire writes an incredibly touching script, and boy do you feel it as you read.
Dustin Nguyen's illustrations are beyond beautiful. I loved the way the scenes from the past blended together in an almost dreamlike state. The watercolor style is remarkable. There is something to be said about a comic that can elicit so much feeling after only two issues. Descender is powerful, distinct, and meaningful. Brace yourself for an ending that will leave you on the edge of your seat.
