Diane Nelson Writes To DC Comics' Freelance Creators About The Big Move West

Diane_Nelson_9.09We reported earlier this week that DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson was to address DC Comics staffers about the practicalities of the big move west, as the publisher moves from New York to Burbank.

Subsequently, a letter was sent to DC Comics freelancers, informing them of what was to come.

Aside from the use of first names, it does seem a little on the corporate side. It reads as follows,

Dear Friends,

As part of the company's transition to a single location, we will be sharing with our employees this week a detailed plan for how we intend to blend the teams from our two offices into one integrated organization. We have taken several months to assess our resources and organizational structure. This review has allowed us to strategically align the New York and Burbank teams to create integrated departments that will help us achieve DCE's business objectives for the future together in one location, as a team.

The new structure is intended to drive greater collaboration and coordination across our various functional areas as they come together in a single location. This includes more closely connecting related business activities, ensuring clarity of roles and responsibilities, increased focus on content, franchise and business planning, as well as, more emphasis on Talent development & recruitment.

For many of our team members, this means promotions and expanded areas of responsibilities. We will look to share some of this good news with you toward the end of this week.

As an important member of the DCE team, we are making every effort to find ways to communicate all of this clearly and fully to all of you and are dedicated to helping you understand the company and how you will interact with this new structure. The transition to the new organization is beginning now and will be complete by April 2015, and of course the co-publishers, Dan and Jim, are here to assist you with questions you may have regarding the new organization, employee roles and key contacts within the company.

Thank you for your continued commitment to DC Entertainment and passion for our characters and stories.

Best wishes,

Diane

One of the big worries expressed to me from creators is the fear that editors that they have created a long working relationship with, will be disappearing and their work with it. I guess "emphasis on Talent development & recruitment" is meant to tackle that.

We also mentioned back in the day that this move would be an opportunity for some, and"for many of our team members, this means promotions and expanded areas of responsibilities" probably tackles that.

Although "we are making every effort to find ways to communicate all of this clearly and fully to all of you and are dedicated to helping you understand the company and how you will interact with this new structure" seems to have left some baffled.

More to come, I'm sure. Should be an interesting NYCC.
