Has Superior Iron Man Introduced A New Transgender Character To The Marvel Universe?
Superior Iron Man has given us a new character, Jamie Carlson, Teen Abomination, the previously unknown son of the late Happy Hogan, a teenager trapped in a body that they doesn't recognise as theirs, and getting rather cross about it all.
And in this week's issue of Superior Iron Man, giving us this one scene.
"I really didn't now if I was in the right body before…" that's referring to his previous pre-monstrous life, gained after being exposed to gamma radiation.
But is this an indication that, even before that, Jamie was coming to terms with being transgender? And giving some attitudes towards such a transition, is the name "Teen Abomination" rather satirical? Reclaiming in the insult? Or asking the audience exactly what they see an abomination as? And is Jean Carlson a woman trapped in a monster's body, emphasising the lack of identification with the way you see your own body?
Or am I reading too much into it? But for a comic that emphasises the transference of mind and body from form to form to form, it wouldn't be out of keeping…
Also, it's out on the same day that Sophie Campbell has her first print-published credit as… Sophie Campbell.
Today's comics courtesy of Orbital Comics, London, launching a Music & Comics Gallery on Friday, 12 comic artists have been tasked with taking an album of their choosing, and creating a new piece of cover art for it, with proceeds going to Brain Tumour Research. And on Saturday are running a Free Comic Book Day that they say won't hand out random grab bags and won't run out by midday. Londoners know what they are getting at…
