Is Sergeant Blast The First Hanna-Barbera Trans Character?
This is Sergeant Blast from Wacky Races. On the left. In the middle is Private Meekly. They ride the Army Surplus Special.
That's him. Well, in today's Wacky Raceland comic from Hanna-Barbera owners Warner Bros' DC Comics, all the familiar characters get revamped. In a Mad Max Fury Road fashion.
Oh, and the cars talk.
We get a very different Red Baron and Peter Perfect…
Dastardly and Muttley…
Penelope Pittstop, the Slag Brothers and the Anthill Mob…
So, yes, there are many, many, many changes to the characters, from gender to ethnic identity and general moral outlook. But Sergeant Blast, may be one of the most noteworthy.
So, yes, not exactly a safe space. And some may object to a trans portrayal amidst a number of, what for want of a better term, I'll go with genetic freaks…
But it's not a safe space for anyone. Wacky Raceland #1 is published today by DC Comics.
And regarding the title question, Scooby-Doo and Shaggy dressing up really doesn't count.
