Marvel Starts To Close The Gap On DC Comics In November
It bears repeating that at the beginning of the year, DC Comics's marketshare figures had slipped in the twenties, lagging far behind Marvel. That they have achieved three market share dominances three months in a row despite publishing far fewer titles than Marvel, is a real achievement for the publisher. And it was Justice League #3 that took the top spot, just like the previous two issues, beating out both Point One, Uncanny X-Men #1 and Avenging Spider-Man #1 from Marvel, pushed into fourth and fifth place behind Batman #3, Action Comics #3 and Green Lantern #3.
In October DC Comics had 42.47% of dollars spent on comics, to Marvel's 29.1% share, and on actual numbers of products sold, DC has taken 50.97% of sales to Marvel's 30.29%.
Those DC numbers are down for DC in November with 34.69% of the month's retail dollars and 39.66% of products sold, while Marvel take 33.3% of retail dollars and 37.94% of product sold.
Much of this will be a result of DC not having the boost from second and third prints of those first September issues in October, but it is still worth pointing out that Marvel still publish more comic books than DC, so per book, DC's lead is still substantial.
Or course reports of a number of issue 3 books from DC sitting on shelves with large returns expected may put these results into further perspective. DC continue to promote a number of titles with returnability, which may overestimate their impact on the market. Diamond try to mollify that by reducing returnable books' statistics by 10%. With isse 3s though, that just might not be enough.
Oh and Batman Noelby Lee Bermejo was the best selling graphic novel of the month, through Diamond. Overall graphic novel orders recovered from their dramatic fall in October.
