Olive And The Underworld Meets… The World

Olive And The Underworld, Volume 1, Written by Emily Felt Illustrated by Laura West, Kickstarter closing Monday, Sep 21 at 6:37 am PDT, To be published March 2016

Olive and the Underworld, Volume 1 is a 50 page, full color graphic novel. While there are mature themes such as death and the afterlife, Olive doesn't contain graphic violence or harsh curse words and so would be suitable for a young adult audience as well as adults.

Emily Felt writes,

At its heart, this is a story about the sometimes lonely journey one goes on to find one's place in the world. Who am I? Where do I belong? Who will love me? And learning along the way that things aren't always what they seem.

I love Olive. My heart swells a little when I think of her. I know she's a fictional character, but I adore her. I'm writing Volume 2 right now, and little things come up about her and the other characters that surprise and delight me as I get to know them better. She's fun, for sure.

Olive is a girl who struggles with feeling alone and searching to find a place where she fits in the world. I love that this book can resonate with a 13 year old girl as well as with us older types of either gender. We've all felt alone at one time or another.

This is a first comic or graphic novel for both Laura (the artist) and myself (the writer) but it's been something that both of us have wanted to do for a long time. We were both practical young ladies, but as we left our twenties far behind, we decided to pursue our passions. Laura got a degree at the Art Center College of Design and I took a UCLA Extension class on comic book writing. We were introduced by a mutual friend (thank you, Laura Bartak!) who thought our styles would fit well together and Olive became a reality.

We are now in the final days of our Kickstarter – we end at 6:37am PDT on Monday! We are so close to our goal, but still just far enough away that I have little stress attacks throughout the day.

While Olive is the most creatively fulfilling I've ever done, this Kickstarter may be one of the most personally fulfilling. Even though we're not quite there in terms of dollars, the amount of encouragement, support, and love thrown our way from friends, family and people we just met has been outstanding and overwhelming. It's been truly amazing and quite the ride!

And now we just need to get over that final finish line so this is what we've decided to do. If we get 25 new backers from Bleeding Cool, we're going to throw in a 5×7 print for all our backers at the $18 backer level and higher revealing an important character who will be introduced in Volume 2. I can tell you this about the character: his name is Norbert, he is not what you expect, he will be instrumental in helping Olive decide that Purgatory is home and he has been one of my favorite characters since day 1. Please message "BLEEDING COOL" once you've backed the page.

We hope that you'll help us cross that finish line, but I've also linked our tumblr and facebook pages in case you just want to keep in touch.
