Did You Read Chew #60 Before Sitting Down To Your Thanksgiving Dinner? (SPOILERS)
Yesterday saw the release of the final issue of Chew, #60, by John Layman and Rob Guillory. Flashing forward from the previous issue, many years into the future,
Over five years the series has told the story of a world where it is illegal to eat chicken. Where people have developed super abilities around food – including the lead FBI character Tony Chu, who can read the history of anything- or anyone – he eats. With issue 60 beginning with his chewing on his own fingernails as a way to remember what was.
And there are alien letters, alien plants, alien intervention. And finally, in issue 60, the aliens land.
Over time we finally learnt how these tied in together. That the chicken ban wasn't due to avian flu. It was all a conspiracy to scare people. To save humanity.
Because the aliens didn't want people to eat chicken. And destroyed alien worlds where the population didn't stop eating anything that looked like poultry.
And the same was going to happen to Earth. Unless the unspeakable could be done. Use all the food given powers, combined like recipes into one man, Tony Chu, who could mix them all, and use them to kill everyone on the planet who had eaten chicken, still in their systems.
It worked. Millions died. Billions lived. And then Chew #60 takes a trip forward in time, for that alien arrival on Earth.
And in Chew #60, we finally discovered why…
Well, would you visit a planet full of Kentucky Fried Humans?
Oh, and in an unrelated note, here's the current TV ad for McDonalds' Chicken McNuggets.
It's not every day that McDoanlds runs a national TV ad to confirm that Chicken McNuggets don't contain beaks, innards or feet. But that's the world we live in now, I guess.
