Cammy's Covers – Before Watchmen To Batgirl

A week late due to NYCC! Sorry! – Rich

Cammy's Covers – Before Watchmen To BatgirlBefore Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan #2 by Adam Hughes

Being inspired from the sci-fi publications of old, Hughes thrills me to no end with this cover depicting two familiar characters in a seemingly familiar genre. The explanation of Dr. Manhattan's origin as some sort of alien invader (complete with the pointy ears) would make sense to some people, with Ms. Jupiter falling madly in love with him as the couple made their way back to Earth. The strategic placement of her helmet is another thing I liked, as well as the design of her breathing apparatus. Another beautiful cover by Adam Hughes, and another homerun for the Before Watchmen covers in general.

Cammy's Covers – Before Watchmen To Batgirl  Dark Shadows #8 by Francesco Francavilla

While I don't have a fear of clowns, ventriloquist dolls, or mimes like some people do, I must admit that this decaying doll face did give me the willies. That asymmetrical design combined with the mismatching noses and mouths creeps me out, with the cherry on top being the miniature bat in the eyeless socket. With Halloween just around the corner, leave it to Francavilla to get me in this eerie mood.

Dominique Laveau: Voodoo Child #7 by Rafael Grampá

Cammy's Covers – Before Watchmen To Batgirl Upon a quick glance, I originally wasn't going to pick this cover as a contender (the stupid Arrow banner didn't help). Some gal going all Ariel out from the waves, big deal! But then I came back to it after double checking all the titles that came out this week, and thought "hey, why not give it another look? It is Rafael Grampá after all." Sure enough, it's not just some gal emerging from the waves. Those aren't even waves! It's all a part of the majestic dress she's wearing, as she soars towards the undiscovered beyond. It's a very wondrous dress, intricately detailed with the whimsical effect of mist added throughout. From a distance, waves. At a closer glace, Fashion Week in Paris. I apologize for almost doubting your brilliance, Grampá. My favorite cover of the week, hands down.

Cammy's Covers – Before Watchmen To BatgirlEvil Ernie #1 by Dan Brereton

While I'm unfamiliar with the character, I do enjoy this cover something fierce. Maybe it's the evil grin on his face, the hellfire surrounding him, or the poisonous stench oozing from his ribcage. Whatever it is, it reminds me slightly of Simon Bisley a bit, with the painted style and the punk rock vibe it carries as a whole. From what I've heard from friends who enjoy this character's legacy, this dude's a badass, so it only seems fitting to pair him with a cover artist who is equally so.

Cammy's Covers – Before Watchmen To BatgirlBatgirl #13 by Greg Capullo and FCO Plascencia

Simple, yet effective. I think it's the lip gloss that really got me with this cover. FCO Plascencia's coloring is just perfect, and really works well with Capullo's style in my opinion. Her eyes, her lips, her hair; it's all we see from this view, and yet it makes all the difference.
