CW's 'The Originals' To End After Five Seasons

Exactly one year after she announced the date of The Vampire Diaries' series finale, creator/showrunner Julie Plec took to social media to announce that The Originals' upcoming fifth season will be the show's last. A fifth season will give the show's creativors an opportunity to wrap-up the series on their own terms and (hopefully) in a manner that will be satisfying to the show's dedicated fan-base.

Plec took to Twitter early on Thursday to share the news:

The Originals was created as a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries and premiered in October 2013. Following the machinations of vampire Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) and his family as they become embroiled in the supernatural politics of New Orleans.  Although there were always concerns over how well The Originals could function on its own, apart from its "mother show," the series carved out its own identity over the course of four seasons. The series would even spin off its own web series, The Originals: The Awakening, examining Kol Mikaelson's (Nathaniel Buzolic) relationships with both his siblings and the other supernatural elements of New Orleans' famous French Quarter.

Plec is no stranger to genre television series, besides her work with The Vampire Diaries, and The Originals, she also served as writer/producer on series such as Containment, The Tomorrow People, and Kyle XY. She's also produced films such as Scream 2, Scream 3, and Teaching Mrs. Tingle.

The horror-fantasy series was executive produced by Plec, Michael Narducci, Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo; the show's production is handled by My So-Called Company, Alloy Entertainment, and CBS Television Studios,  with Warner Bros. Television handling show's distribution.
