Friday Runaround – Turning Down $20,000,000This is Computo the Comic Link Conqueror speaking. I come for your women. But for now I merely collate comic-related bits and pieces online. One day I will rule. Until that day, read on.

20th Century Danny Boy: DC Comics $20,000,000+ Payout For Superman – REJECTED

Buried in a footnote to a line about accounting and reservation of amounts due, DC have stated that, "…the record fact remains that a reserve was set; it totals more than $20 million, and the funds will be paid to Larson if this Court enforces the 2001 agreement. Larson gets all of this money, though Marks may have a claim to 5%; only Toberoff loses his improperly obtained 40% (or more) cut."  Thus the actual amount is still yet to be revealed, but that equates to roughly $2,000,000 per year since the accounting period began in 2001.  That's a lot of money for anyone to turn their back on and when you consider that the deal included such benefits as health insurance – a brilliant carrot to dangle in the USA – then it would give people pause and have them ask, what exactly was wrong with the deal in the first place.

20th Century Danny Boy: "A Curse On The Superman Movie!" – A Look Back At Jerry Siegel's 1975 Press Release

Siegel's essay (really, it was an essay, not a press release per se) documented all of the issues that both he and Joe Shuster had faced, the legal battles, the broken promises and, most importantly, by singling out Jack Liebowitz, Siegel was able to give the whole sordid saga a human face – people finally had a name to chase, as opposed to a company which could hide behind corporate structures.  And the media lapped it up in spades!

So it's a challenge to our cover artists to think more in terms of design. We're leaving the canvas open to them to work with as much as we possibly can. Because our covers carry a lot of information. They have ratings, they have UPS, they have all these things. So we're designing our covers so that all these things aren't locked in a specific area of the cover so that for the most part the canvas is empty for the artist to do their thing. So we're just going to look at different methodologies by which to attract readers to our books, because more than anything that top third thing—that's thinking from the 1930's. So it's time for us to move on.
