REVIEW: Rai #2 — "Stillborn Desire Leads To The Issue's Central Conflict"

Valiant Entertainment, creative team: Dan Abnett, Juan Jose Ryp, Andrew Dalhouse, Dave Sharpe

Can you make a sad story about something made without feelings? Writer Dan Abnett seems to think so as two cyborgs hunt down code fragments of their creator in an attempt to stave off a kind of cyber armageddon. Their search leads them to find something forgotten and longing, but that stillborn desire leads to the issue's central conflict. The artwork from Ryp, Dalhouse and Sharpe gets a little too busy for its own good during the action scenes and the thematic struggle could have been done more subtly than the blatant statement near the end. The lead characters could have more personality, but the arguable antagonist comes off very sympathetic. If you're a fan of the franchise, you'd likely consider this issue to be stellar. Even if you're not, it ain't bad. RATING: HONORABLE MENTION.
