No Sidekicks, But Butt Kicks At Marvel's Next Big Thing Panel

No Sidekicks, But Butt Kicks At Marvel's Next Big Thing Panel

The Marvel Next Big Thing panel promises some announcements, and they started off by discussing the Vanishing Point, the location that the other Steve Rogers is in, and how Generations will see a number of characters find themselves in the same place. Axel Alonso says that if they were to want to bring back the original Logan, the Vanishing Point would be the place to do it.

Margaret Stohl went on to discuss her Generations issue, with Carol Danvers teaming up with Mar-Vell again, 'no sidekicks, but butt kicks'.

Sana Amanat talks the issue that sees Ms. Marvel meeting up with classic Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers before she became Captain Marvel. We will see Ms. Marvel becoming an intern at Woman Magazine, which Danvers used to be editor of. All about Kamala seeing a different side of Carol.

The Generations issue featuring the Spider-Men will apparently feature some turning points for the characters.

Moving on to Marvel Legacy. Alonso says Legacy is the period that follows Secret Empire. About three dozen characters and artifacts will be returning to Marvel. They challenged creators to dig into Marvel history and come up with stories from there, thus Sabretooth meeting up with Iron Fist again, as that was where he was introduced.

The X-Men: Blue and Gold crossover comes up, and Cullen Bunn says he loved those classic crossovers between the various X-Men teams, so this event will be a throwback to that. We see Rachel Grey in her hound costume, and some of the greatest moments of X-Men history will be replayed with new characters in them.

Stohl and Amanat discuss Captain Marvel's Dark Origins storyline, and this will pick up on where the first storylines left off, with returning to a universe with dark versions of characters we know.

Rodney Barnes discusses Falcon, launching in Legacy, and how Sam Wilson has gone through a lot, and he has to readjust and figure out who he is, so he decides to focus on more street-level stuff but then a mystical thing happens, which makes Sam use different things than he's accustomed to using. Joshua Cassara is looking forward to putting their stamp on a solo Falcon series, he says he likes where they start but he loves where they go.

Donny Cates is up next to discuss Doctor Strange, raves about the art team involved, Gabriel Walta, Jordie Bellaire and covers by Mike Del Mundo. We will see the lengths Stephen Strange will go to to get his life back in order…including becoming Sorceror Supreme again instead of Loki. End of second issue has a major reveal and return that they wouldn't reveal now.

Nick Lowe then announces that newly exclusive Donny Cates will be joining with God Country's Geoff Shaw to takeover Thanos. Starting issue 13, they will look at how everyone knows how the Marvel Universe will end. And it ends with Thanos. Shaw says it's out there, crazy and huge. The cover has dead Ms Marvel, Spider-Man, Hulk, Ultron and Galactus.

Amanat joked that Cates was actually an intern of hers a long time ago, and was the worst intern she ever had.

Alonso says it's a very dynamic first script.

Lowe talked about how Gerry Duggan and Aaron Kuder's plans for Guardians of the Galaxy are so huge and nuts, that they're his favorite part of creative retreats.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is up next, Alonso says how the book is unlike any other. Amanat says how in the Legacy arc she'll team up with Ben Grimm and Human Torch, which Lowe says she shouldn't have said and wasn't part of their announcements at this panel, but I'm pretty certain that was known.

They then made a few announcements. Digital first The Immortal Iron Fists and X-Men: Grand Design.

Audience questions then began, with the panelists naming their favorite heroes and villains. Lowe says Spider-Man and Magneto, Alonso said Black Panther, Amanat said Rogue and Magneto, Shaw said Hulk. Stohl loves Ms. Marvel and Doctor Octopus and Venom. Cates said Thanos. Bunn said Nightcrawler and Magneto. Barnes said Luke Cage.

Someone then asked if Marvel still publish Star Wars comics? Really? But then asked about a Star Wars/Marvel crossover. They'd love to do it but it's a bit more complicated than that.

How does Generations work differently for those characters who have already met their legacy counterpoints. Amanat says it's about seeing a different perspective and viewpoint, and what that mantle means to them. And it definitely affects future relationships between characters.

If Generations is more Silver Age love, will there be any love for more Golden Age characters? If Generations does really well, you never know, but no current plans.

Any Black Widow news? There is stuff coming up. Not announced at SDCC, but will be coming.

What part of their work gives them that huge satisfaction point? Lowe starts off says what never gets old is when you get art in. Says that when Stuart Immonen sends in a page of Amazing Spider-Man it's like the day stops. Alonso agrees entirely. Shaw says drawing is fun, the best days are when you get to draw something that really resonates with yourself, no matter what that is. Cates discusses the teamwork element, and again, getting the art come in. Amanat says when an idea goes through to completion, and the first time she saw someone cosplaying as Ms. Marvel. Cates then joked how awesome it is to see so many people walking around dressed as Doctor Strange because of what he writes.

Stohl says it's gratifying working with people who just love working on these things. Bunn reiterates the collaboration, those moments you strike on something and it's like fire. Now it's doing conventions and getting to interact with the readers, after being a fan himself for the longest time. Barnes again says collaboration, as it's so different from working on TV and film. Also loves working with the editors. Cassara says finding those moments when reading the script and the art just pops out because it connects so well.
