Before reading this week's Absolute Wonder Woman, it would be worth brushing up on the legend of Persephone. Yes, yes, you have to do homework to read a comic, but still. Persephone lived in a world of perpetual summer, her mother was Demeter, goddess of plant life. Hades, god of hell, took Persephone, and in her absence, she saw the world's plantlife die and people go hungry. Persephone, who had fallen in love with her captor and was now Queen of the Underworld, missed her mother and the world above, and knew that if she ate or drank anything there, she would have to stay forever. Demeter learned of Persephone's fate and demanded her return. On her way home, she ate six seeds from a pomegranate. And so, after she returned and the world came back to life, she would spend six months in hell, which would bring autumn and winter to the world, until she returned in the spring. And that's how we get seasons. Who knew studying the classics forty years ago would come in so handy?
