The Week In Kissing – FF, Elephantmen, Cover Girls, The Twelve, Angel And Faith and Avengers Vs X-Men
This column attempts to celebrate the locking of lips rather than the cocking of guns or smashing of fists that pervade modern day comics. Hoping to show a little bit of tenderness, love and just a little hope it may go further. But there's not a lot of smooching in the comics I read this week… Morning Glories especially is a complete lip tease. Lots of looks, lots of proximity, even touching… but ultimately it's just a clever, continuing narrative full of emotion, peril and keeping those lips apart. FF has Valeria planning in her future as well… though in this case, I'm glad.
And yes, I know that it looks as if it's Franklin thinking that, with the eye placement. But it's not. Honest. It's a lesson in perspective there.
Elephantmen from Image gives us a tender kiss that is both moving and haunting, representing a state of mind, of obsession rather than a physical presence.
And then there's the Cover Girls hardcover from Image featuring the female pin up and comic work of Guillem March. And well, yes, um… there's a lot of this kind of thing.
So thank goodness for The Twelve which give us something a little more restrained. And a squee for those who have been waiting for quite a while.
That seems to be it… unless of course you also include what in the vernacular is described as a Glasgow kiss… first from Angel And Faith…
And then from Avengers Vs X-Men #0. Repeatedly. Giving Frank Cho the opportunity to draw a fine bruise or two.
Hmm, I thought I was doing this sort of column to avoid violence? Ah well.
UPDATE: Kyle and Northstar from Astonishing X-Men. Awww…
