Things To Do This Weekend In Birmingham If You Like All Things Pop!
There has certainly been a change in the air and the coming of Spring to Birmingham can just as easily be marked by the return of MCM's Birmingham weekender at the NEC next weekend (March 19th – 20th).
Back in November, they brought with them none other than The Bionic Man, Lee Majors, and this time it's the turn of Emmy Award winning actress, Lindsay Wagner, The Bionic Woman herself making her MCM debut. For readers who remember her show, which ran for three seasons back in the 70's, her appearance will be considered the star turn no doubt. Let's all agree to not even mention the most recent TV travesty starring that one off of Eastenders, shall we?
For others, there are a whole host of TV and film actors offering autographs for a fee, ranging from Thomas Craig and Helene Joy from contemporary TV show Murdoch Mysteries to MCM con favourites and Red Dwarf alumni Robert Llewellyn and Danny John-Jules, as well as appearances from a whole range of actors from the bygone age of TV and film such as Phil Daniels (Quadrophenia) and Liza Goddard (Skippy), as well as anyone who held a gun or sneezed in Star Wars it would seem. Something for everyone I suppose. Oh, and Peter Wyngarde too, Jason King himself.
The full list of TV and film guests can be viewed here.
As for the Comics Village, expect a good array of indie publishers offering a range of comics on many and any subject matter, including superheroes. Having championed many indie publishers here at Bleeding Cool, it's good to see so many successful publishing ventures out there, such as Metal Made Flesh, The GeeBees Comic and T Pub, the latter becoming something of a growing force on the UK indie scene in recent years.
Both days are guaranteed to be busy with fans, newbies and cosplayers as well as panels throughout the day along with the stalls selling anything from Japanese Kit Kats to the ubiquitous but fun, Funko Pop Vinyls. And, all importantly for me, an on-site pub too, to rest your weary legs and grab a pint. It's often the best place from which to grab the best pictures of cosplayers too. Well, that's my excuse anyway and I'm sticking to it.
There are still tickets available, but going quickly. Grab 'em here if need be and I'll see you there. Or, in the pub at least.
Olly MacNamee teaches English and Media, for his sins, in a school somewhere in Birmingham. Some days, even he doesn't know where it is. Follow him on twitter @ollymacnamee or read about his exploits at olly.macnamee@blogspot.co.uk. Or don't. You can also read his articles fairly frequently at www.bleedingcool.com too.
